The steps in the college process are numerous and complex, and students often feel overwhelmed when faced with performing them alone. Students and families need to understand that this process - including the college search, standardized test planning, campus visits and interviews, the application and enrollment decisions - is most successful when choreographed, not executed as a series of uncoordinated leaps, kicks or spins. Heather Marks is your college admissions consulting dance partner ready to lead you through your own unique routine which will take time to practice and then perform.

I consider every student I counsel my dance partner. The rhythmically-challenged or uncoordinated should not despair; learning the particular steps to a dance comes with time and practice. Each partner has a specific role in the dance: the lead (college consultant) usually initiates movement and the follow (student) maintains it. At the very minimum, each person must carry her own load and be responsible for her own balance. Leading does not involve pulling or pushing. A good lead chooses the appropriate steps to take to best suit the music, partner ability and dance floor. A good lead is aware of how the follower responds to any particular cue and is ready to compensate. A good lead never dances the same way with every partner. Although, as a woman, I follow on the real dance floor, these leading principles inform all my counseling work in the metaphorical dance that is the college process.

My deep commitment to making something better than before, my practice of cultivating someone’s full potential started during my formative years at Stanford University. Training is what I do best – setting goals, engaging in hard work and peaking at performance time. I intentionally keep my consulting practice small to ensure highly customized and personalized attention. I work with students from Jackson Hole, Wyoming and beyond in person as well as via email, Skype and FaceTime.
I graduated with a BA degree with Honors from Stanford University and continued my studies at University of Michigan receiving my Masters degree. At Stanford, I was a varsity athlete, study abroad student and student advisor. For the past 15 years, I have worked with high school students first as a Math and Science teacher, then as an administrator, and most recently as a college counselor at an International Baccalaureate World School and as an independent college consultant.
Each year, I attend national conferences on college admissions and spend time visiting college campuses across the nation so that I can provide first-hand knowledge to my clients that no guidebook or website can. I am a member of the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and the Rocky Mountain Association for College Admissions Counseling (RMACAC). I uphold all standards set forth by NACAC’s Statement of Good Practices.
